The Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has commissioned the Southward Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Edumo, emphasizing that healthcare delivery must remain a shared responsibility, as government alone cannot meet the growing needs of the population.
Governor Ododo described the hospital as a symbol of hope, progress, and a bold commitment to the health and well-being of citizens. He commended the vision, courage, and foresight of the facility’s promoters and management, assuring them of his administration’s continued support through the provision of a conducive and enabling environment.
In his words, “Investing in healthcare infrastructure is not only an act of enterprise, but also an act of service to humanity. What we have built here goes beyond a medical facility; it is a lifeline for communities and a significant contribution to the development of our dear state.”
The Governor noted that the hospital is equipped with modern diagnostic facilities, including CT scan, MRI, digital X-ray, ultrasound services, and a well-equipped laboratory. He stressed that early detection and treatment of illnesses make healthcare more effective, less complicated, and more affordable.
He further emphasized that the government welcomes private sector initiatives that complement its efforts and expand access to quality healthcare services, reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the healthcare system across the state.
The Governor also acknowledged the honour of naming the hospital’s diagnostic centre after Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing it as a well-deserved recognition of her commitment to maternal and child care, women’s well-being, preventive healthcare, and social inclusion through the Renewed Hope Initiative.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his deliberate investments in the health sector, noting that his efforts continue to positively impact the well-being of Nigerians. He reaffirmed Kogi State’s alignment with the Federal Government’s healthcare vision and its readiness to support policies and programmes aimed at building a healthier nation.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Chief Bosede Omodara, stated that the facility was established to complement the efforts of both state and federal governments in strengthening healthcare delivery. She noted that the hospital is strategically positioned to serve the host community through accessible and affordable diagnostic and medical services.
She called for strategic partnerships with government at all levels, particularly through patronage and integration into the Kogi State Health Insurance Programme, while also expressing support for the administration and its future aspirations.
In their separate remarks, the Directors of the hospital, Prof. Victor Kolawole and Dr. (Mrs.) Sherifat Seun Faniran, emphasized the institution’s commitment to excellence and its goal of reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for quality medical care. They commended Governor Ododo for his support and collaboration.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, Hon. (Barr.) Zacchaeus Dare, and the Obaro of Kabba, Chairman of the Okun Area Traditional Council, HRM Oba (Dr.) Solomon Dele Owoniyi, described the event as historic. They noted that the hospital stands as a monumental and unprecedented development, praising the Governor’s commitment to the welfare of the people.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulaziz Adams, confirmed that the hospital has been duly registered and has complied with all necessary regulatory requirements. He noted that the facility houses advanced medical equipment not commonly available in some neighbouring states, thereby positioning Kogi as a destination for quality healthcare and boosting the state’s economy. He urged citizens to protect and make good use of both public and private healthcare facilities.
In his remarks, the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (Rtd), appreciated the Governor for his genuine love for the people of Kabba-Bunu, the Okun region, and Kogi State at large. He commended the administration’s sustained efforts in improving security across the state.
