Ododo Calls for Protection of Democracy, Commends Tinubu’s Democratic Credentials

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in protecting and strengthening the nation’s democracy, describing it as the most credible platform for ensuring peace, development, accountability, and the protection of fundamental rights.
In his Democracy Day message to Nigerians on Friday, Governor Ododo congratulated citizens on another milestone in the country’s democratic journey, urging them to reflect on the sacrifices of heroes who fought for democratic governance in Nigeria.
The Governor noted that Democracy Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the resilience of democratic institutions and the collective efforts that have sustained the nation’s democratic ideals over the years.
Quoting former American President Abraham Lincoln’s famous definition of democracy as “government of the people, by the people, for the people,” Ododo emphasized that democracy thrives not only through the election of leaders but also through active citizen participation in governance and nation-building.
He stressed that despite the challenges confronting the nation, democracy remains the most effective framework for promoting peace, development, participation, and good governance.
Governor Ododo urged Nigerians to safeguard the gains of democracy, which he said were secured through years of struggle and sacrifice by patriotic citizens who envisioned a better nation.
“We must reject actions capable of undermining our democratic institutions and instead strengthen the values of tolerance, dialogue, unity, and responsible citizenship,” he stated.
The Governor also highlighted the importance of good governance in national development, citing former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s assertion that good governance remains a critical factor in eradicating poverty and promoting development.
Ododo used the occasion to congratulate President , describing him as one of the foremost champions of democracy in Nigeria. He noted that the President’s political journey reflects the triumph of democratic struggle and commitment to democratic ideals.
According to the Governor, President Tinubu’s emergence as Nigeria’s leader demonstrates the enduring rewards of service, sacrifice, and dedication to democratic principles.
He further called on Nigerians to continue supporting and praying for the country and its leaders at all levels, noting that nation-building requires collective effort, patriotism, and positive contributions from citizens.
Governor Ododo also paid tribute to late democracy icon , describing him as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic consciousness whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the country’s modern democracy.
“He was wealthy enough to ignore service to his people and powerful enough to compromise, yet he chose to fight for democracy. His sacrifices continue to inspire generations of Nigerians,” the Governor said.
On behalf of the government and people of Kogi State, Governor Ododo wished Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day celebration and urged citizens to remain united in building a stronger nation where democracy continues to deliver hope, justice, opportunity, and prosperity for all.
