Commission unveils training, logistics, voter education measures as Assembly committee assesses preparedness

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has declared itself fully prepared to conduct credible, peaceful, transparent and inclusive Local Government elections scheduled for October 17, 2026.
The assurance was given on Monday when the House Committee on the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) paid an oversight visit to the electoral body to assess its level of preparedness and identify possible challenges ahead of the polls.
Chairman of KOSIEC, Hon. Mamman Nda Eri, told the lawmakers that the Commission had moved from the planning stage into full operational preparations, with critical aspects of the electoral process already receiving attention.
According to him, the Commission has intensified the training of electoral personnel, commenced arrangements for the deployment of Returning Officers and put in place logistics for the secure custody and timely distribution of sensitive electoral materials.
Eri said KOSIEC had also prioritised inclusivity, stressing that women, youths and persons living with disabilities would be provided opportunities to participate fully in the electoral process.

The KOSIEC chairman maintained that electoral credibility was not determined solely by events on Election Day, but by the quality of preparations, effective coordination with security agencies, professional conduct of officials and cooperation among stakeholders.
He disclosed that the Commission had sustained consultations with political parties, civil society organisations, traditional institutions and security agencies as part of efforts to build confidence and ensure a smooth electoral process.
He added that voter education had been expanded to deepen public understanding of voting procedures and civic responsibilities, while the Commission had strengthened its communication channels for prompt dissemination of accurate electoral information.
The Commission has also launched its official website, www.kosiec.org, as part of measures to improve transparency and provide members of the public with easier access to electoral information and updates.
Speaking earlier, Chairman of the House Committee on SIEC, Hon. Suleiman Abdulrazak, said the visit was in fulfilment of the legislature’s oversight responsibility and aimed at establishing the level of preparedness of KOSIEC ahead of the October 17 polls.
Abdulrazak commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for what he described as strong support for the Commission and grassroots democratic development in the state.
He specifically cited the provision of operational vehicles, renovation of facilities and other interventions aimed at improving the capacity of KOSIEC to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.

The lawmaker said the interventions demonstrated the Governor’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and grassroots governance in Kogi State.
Responding, Eri appreciated the Governor’s support while stressing the Commission’s determination to maintain professionalism and work with all relevant stakeholders to deliver a credible electoral process.
With preparations entering the final stretch, KOSIEC said it remained focused on delivering the October 17 Local Government elections in accordance with democratic principles and strengthening public confidence in grassroots democracy.
