The Kogi State Government has vowed to take a firm stance against child labour and the trafficking of children within the state.
Halimat Alhassan, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo on Child Labour and Trafficking, made the announcement in a statement to the press on Wednesday in Lokoja.
Alhassan revealed that the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development is actively working to place children in orphanages into permanent, safe, and nurturing homes.
In her statement, she emphasized, “Since my appointment as the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Usman Ododo, the government has shown its unwavering commitment to addressing these grave issues. Protecting the welfare of our children is not just a priority but a solemn duty that the state government holds in the highest regard.”
She continued, “The Nigerian Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to life, education, health, and protection from abuse and exploitation for all citizens, including children. These rights are not just words on paper—they form the cornerstone of a just society. The law includes 273 sections covering vital issues such as healthcare services, the prohibition of child marriage, and the state’s responsibility to enforce these rights.”
Alhassan also highlighted that, under the Child Rights Act, activities such as child marriage and betrothal of those under 18 are strictly prohibited, calling these measures crucial safeguards for the future of the nation’s children.
“As a responsible government, we are dedicated to ensuring that every child in Kogi State is protected from all forms of harm and deprivation as mandated by law. Our mission is clear: to eradicate child labour and trafficking not only in Kogi but across Nigeria,” she stated.
She called on security agencies, the media, and other stakeholders to collaborate in the fight against child exploitation. “Together, we can end these heinous practices and secure a safer future for every Nigerian child, particularly those here in Kogi State,” she urged.
Alhassan further stressed that any case of child abuse or rights violations would be handled with the utmost urgency and seriousness. “Our children deserve nothing less,” she concluded.
