The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has scheduled the chairmanship and councillorship elections to take place on Saturday, October 19, 2024, across all 21 local government council areas of the state.
During a stakeholders’ meeting in Lokoja on Tuesday, the Chairman of KOSIEC, Mamman Eri, officially announced the election date.
Eri emphasized that the local government election aligns with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, and the authority granted to the State Independent Electoral Commission.
Candidates interested in running for councillorship and chairmanship positions are required to pay N100,000 and N250,000, respectively, for the necessary forms, as stated by Eri.
Furthermore, Eri highlighted a recent ruling by the apex court, which mandates the Federal Government to directly allocate funds from the federation account solely to democratically elected local government officials.
In addition, Eri disclosed that a detailed election timetable and schedule of activities have been meticulously prepared to ensure a transparent, fair, and credible electoral process.
He assured stakeholders that these activities have been carefully crafted to prioritize inclusivity, transparency, and compliance with electoral laws.
Eri concluded by soliciting the continued support and collaboration of all stakeholders to ensure a successful election on October 19.
