1. On this auspicious occasion of Democracy Day, I heartily congratulate all Nigerians on another milestone in our collective democratic journey. Today offers us an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of our heroes and the enduring strength of the democratic ideals that continue to shape our nation.
2. As the renowned American statesman, Abraham Lincoln, once said, “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people.” This timeless truth reminds us that the power of democracy lies not only in electing leaders but also in the active participation of citizens in shaping the destiny of their nation.
3. Democracy remains the most credible platform through which the people exercise their sovereign will, choose their leaders, and hold governments accountable. Despite the challenges that have confronted us as a nation, democracy has continued to provide the framework for peace, development, participation, and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
4. As we celebrate today, I urge all Nigerians to remain committed to the preservation and protection of our democracy. The gains we enjoy today were secured through years of struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment by patriots who believed in a better Nigeria. We must reject actions capable of undermining our democratic institutions and instead strengthen the values of tolerance, dialogue, unity, and responsible citizenship.
5. As former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan aptly noted, “Good governance is perhaps the single most important factor in eradicating poverty and promoting development.” Democracy provides the foundation upon which good governance can thrive, and we must continue to nurture and strengthen that foundation.
6. I particularly congratulate His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, whose life and political journey embody the triumph of democratic struggle. As one of the foremost champions of democracy in our nation, President Tinubu stood firmly with other patriots during some of the most difficult periods in our democratic evolution. Today, democracy has afforded him the opportunity to serve the nation at its highest level, a testament to the enduring rewards of commitment to democratic ideals and service to the people.
7. As citizens, let us continue to support and pray for our country, the President, and leaders at all levels of government. Nation-building is a collective responsibility, and our prayers, patriotism, and positive contributions are essential to the realization of a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.
8. The late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, GCFR will continue to remain the pillar of our democratic consciousness. He was wealthy enough to ignore service to his people. He was powerful enough to reach compromises and bury our democracy. But he chose to fight for us and his fight birthed our modern democracy. He will continue to be remembered as the foundation of our greatness as a nation.
9. On behalf of the Government and people of Kogi State, I wish all Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day celebration. Let us remain united in our resolve to build a stronger nation where democracy continues to deliver hope, opportunity, justice, and prosperity for all.
Happy Democracy Day.
HE Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, FCA
The Chief Servant of Kogi State
