Kogi Govt Condemns Killing of Catholic Priest, Orders Comprehensive Investigation

Lokoja, July 31, 2026 – The Kogi State Government has strongly condemned the killing of Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi of St. Paul Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, describing the incident as a barbaric and unacceptable act, while directing security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation to ensure those responsible are identified, arrested and prosecuted.

The directive was issued by Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo following the tragic killing of the Catholic priest, according to a statement released on Friday in Lokoja by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo.

The government expressed deep sorrow over the death of the cleric and extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, the Diocese, the family of the deceased and the entire Christian community.

According to the statement, Governor Ododo has mandated all security agencies operating in the state to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring every individual connected with the crime to justice.

“The murder of Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi is a painful tragedy that has saddened the Government and the people of Kogi State. We condemn this barbaric act in the strongest possible terms and assure the Church and the family of the deceased that the perpetrators will not escape justice,” the statement said.

It added that the Governor had directed security agencies to conduct a painstaking, professional and comprehensive investigation to establish the facts surrounding the killing and ensure that all those involved face the full weight of the law.

The government also expressed confidence in the competence and professionalism of the security agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred on July 29, 2026.

“We have absolute confidence in the professionalism and capacity of our security agencies to unravel this unfortunate incident. The Government will continue to provide every necessary support to ensure that justice is served and those responsible are held accountable,” the statement added.

While appealing for calm, the government urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing investigations. It also cautioned against the spread of rumours, misinformation or unverified reports capable of undermining the investigative process.

The Kogi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens and residents, assuring that it would continue to strengthen security across the state through sustained collaboration with all relevant security agencies.
