The Kogi State Government, through the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, in collaboration with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing women’s participation in agriculture, with a particular focus on sesame production for global markets.
The capacity-building workshop, themed “Empowering Women Sesame Producers for Global Markets Through Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)”, brought together stakeholders, farmers, and partners to explore effective strategies that ensure quality, safety, and sustainability in sesame farming.
Speaking at the event, held at the Technology Incubation Centre, Lokoja, the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce & Industry, Hon. Muhammed Muktar Shuaibu, commended NEPC for initiating the programme, describing it as a strategic step towards improving the livelihoods of women in the sesame value chain.
Represented by the Director of Administration, Mr Ejeh Michael, the Commissioner reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with relevant agencies to equip women farmers with the knowledge and tools required to meet international benchmarks.
He further emphasised that empowering women in agriculture remains a critical component of the Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo-led administration’s agenda for economic growth and inclusivity.
The Director General of the Kogi State Commodity Exchange, Export Promotion and Market Development Agency (KOSCEPA), Mr Victor Omofaiye, underscored the importance of quality non-oil exports in driving the state’s economy.
He highlighted that a de-stoner machine currently located in Anyigba under the Agricultural Development Project (ADP) could be relocated to Lokoja or a new one procured to boost processing capacity in the state capital.
The NEPC State Coordinator, Mr Usenide Aniekpeno, appreciated the Ministry and the State Government for their continued partnership, assuring stakeholders that the council will sustain its efforts in promoting non-oil exports from Kogi State.
The workshop featured keynote presentations, technical sessions, and interactive discussions aimed at addressing challenges faced by women sesame producers.
Participants gained practical insights on value addition, quality maintenance, and export readiness.
The programme concluded with a call for continuous training and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to position Kogi’s sesame products competitively in the global marketplace.
