In an effort to redefine electricity distribution in Kogi State, Governor Ododo has announced the transfer of power supply responsibilities from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to the newly established Kogi State Electricity Distribution Company (KEDL).
This transition is set to take effect on March 12, 2025, marking a pivotal moment in the state’s energy sector.
The shift comes in the wake of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) approval, which grants regulatory oversight of Kogi’s electricity market to the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC).
This significant transition follows months of preparation by the Kogi state government, which successfully met all regulatory requirements stipulated in the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended).
In an official statement made via social media, NERC emphasized the legal framework supporting this unprecedented move, outlining its commitment to supporting state-level reforms in the energy sector.
“In compliance with the amended Constitution and the Electricity Act 2023 (Amended), NERC has issued an order to transfer regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Kogi State to KSERC,” the commission stated.
Governor Ododo expressed optimism about the change, stating it would enhance power supply reliability and promote greater accountability within the electricity distribution framework in Kogi State. He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing residents with a more efficient and effective energy supply service, thereby fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for Kogi citizens.
