International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8, serves as a global platform to honor the achievements of women, acknowledge their resilience in the face of adversity, and advocate for gender equality. The 2025 theme, “Accelerate Action,” emphasizes the urgency of advancing women’s rights amid concerns about potential setbacks in established freedoms.

Throughout history, women have demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming societal barriers and personal hardships. Their perseverance has been instrumental in shaping societies and driving progress across various sectors. From leading households to spearheading social movements, the true African women spirit continues to inspire and effect change.

However, despite significant strides, many women worldwide still endure various forms of violence and discrimination. In Ivory Coast, for instance, nearly 200 women and girls recently marched in Grand-Bassam to protest femicide and gender-based violence. This demonstration, a sad reminder of personal experiences of abuse and underscored the pressing need for better protection and justice for women.

Also, alarming statistics globally, reveal that a woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes by a family member or partner. Additionally, women’s exposure to conflict has significantly increased over the past decade, exacerbating their vulnerability to violence. These realities call for intensified efforts to safeguard women’s rights and well-being.

Nevertheless, countless women have made indelible marks on their communities and the world at large. Their contributions span various fields, from science and politics to arts and activism. Recognizing and celebrating these achievements not only honors their legacy but also inspires future generations to pursue their aspirations, undeterred by societal constraints.

Therefore, The 2025 IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” serves as a clarion call to expedite progress toward gender equality. Activists express concerns over potential backsliding on established rights amid changing political climates. This theme underscores the necessity for collective and swift action to safeguard and advance the gains made in women’s rights.

In conclusion, International Women’s Day is both a celebration of women’s achievements and a reminder of the ongoing challenges they face. This is another opportunity for individuals and societies to commit to actionable steps that promote equality, protect women’s rights, and honor the invaluable contributions of women worldwide.
