The second batch of youth trainees from Kogi State has embarked on a journey to acquire skills in smart agriculture, marking a significant step toward empowering young people in the agricultural sector.
At a brief departure ceremony in Lokoja, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Timothy Ojomah, urged the 109 trainees to make the most of the opportunity, which focuses on greenhouse farming, aquaculture, and agronomics.
Hon. Ojomah reaffirmed Governor Usman Ododo’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for farmers in the state as a means to combat hunger. He added that the initiative is a strategic step toward establishing Kogi State as a center of agricultural excellence, boosting food security, and generating sustainable job opportunities for youths.
“We are confident that this training will equip our youths with the necessary skills to improve their livelihoods and contribute to the state’s agricultural development,” Hon. Ojomah stated.
He also announced that the upcoming cohort of the Soilless Farm Lab Program would provide even greater opportunities for aspiring agripreneurs, especially within the youth demographic across communities.
In his remarks, Hon. Seyi Bello, member representing Kabba-Bunu State Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, congratulated the trainees and described them as fortunate to be selected for the initiative. He emphasized the careful selection process and the potential of the participants.
“We believe in your potential and are confident that you will excel in this program,” Hon. Bello said. “We urge you not to disappoint the state, but to seize this opportunity to make a positive impact.”
Also speaking, Hon. Abu Jubril, member representing Ajaokuta State Constituency, noted that the training is a key initiative in youth empowerment within the agricultural sector. He highlighted the importance of acquiring skills in modern agricultural practices, including soilless farming, to enhance productivity and competitiveness.
He expressed optimism that the program would significantly contribute to the state’s economic growth and development.
Alhaji Usman Ochidi, member representing Dekina Constituency and Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, commended the state government for its efforts in providing training opportunities through the Soilless Farm Lab. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to boost food production and empower the next generation of farmers.
To further support the trainees, the state government has also provided food items to ensure their basic needs are met during the program. This measure is aimed at allowing participants to focus entirely on their training without concerns about daily sustenance.
A major highlight of the initiative is the Smartcard Partnership, a strategic effort designed to empower the trainees with access to essential tools, mentorship, and resources. This support system is intended to help them transition successfully into agribusiness and contribute meaningfully to agricultural development in Kogi State and beyond.
The Enterprise for Youth in Agriculture (EYIA) initiative, implemented by Soilless Farm Lab and funded by the Mastercard Foundation, is another key component of the program. It aims to empower Nigerian youths—especially young women—through technology-enabled vegetable production. EYIA is committed to improving livelihoods, ensuring food security, and creating sustainable employment opportunities across the agricultural value chain.
