Kogi State Government Commences Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week’s Second Round
The Kogi State Government has officially launched the Second Round of Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week through the Kogi State PrimaryHealthcare Development Agency.
The event, which took place on January 28, 2025, is part of a concerted effort to reduce morbidity and mortality rates among mothers and children under five years old in Nigeria.
Led by the Executive Governor, Alh. Usman Ahmed Ododo, the campaign is focused on providing essential healthcare services to women and children. Governor Ododo reiterated his commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the state, with a particular emphasis on routine immunization for children aged 0-59 months.
The state government has made significant investments in the health sector to achieve its goal of reducing maternal, newborn, and child mortality rates. The Governor kicked off the campaign by administering vitamin A supplements to children aged 0-59 months.
These efforts underscore Governor Ododo’s dedication to enhancing healthcare outcomes in Kogi State and reducing the need for external medical services. The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdullazeez Adams Adeiza, commended Governor Ododo for his health-friendly leadership and the positive impact of his healthcare initiatives on the lives of the people.
Dr. Abdullazeez highlighted the significant transformation in the health sector under Governor Ododo’s administration, emphasizing the Governor’s unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of the people. The Governor’s achievements in improving healthcare services in Kogi State have been widely recognized and appreciated.
Dr. Mu’azu expressed gratitude to Governor Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, stakeholders, and partners for their support. He encouraged everyone to participate in the MNCH Week, ensuring that all eligible target groups receive the provided interventions.
“In their goodwill messages, representatives from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Malaria Consortium, Religious leaders, Royal father, the Ohiogba of Mozum- King Bukar Ali Khalid and other partners expressed gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency for initiating the program, hoping it would improve the lives of mothers, children, and the community.
Other notable attendees at the event included the Accountant General of Kogi State, Hajia Habibat Tijani, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Aliyu Bello, Special Adviser on Health, Hon. Jibrin Okikiri,Perm.Sec. State Ministry of Health, Mrs Dorcas Enehe, Ex. Sec. KSHIA, Dr. Aledare Adekunle, State Drug Management Agency, Pharm Salamatu Yunusa, Chief Medical Director, Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Prof Isah Adagiri, Chief Medical Director, Hospital Management Board, Dr. Ayo Olayemi, Acting CMD, Prince Audu Teaching Hospital, Anyigba, Dr. Nayo Anthony, Development Partners, as well as Religious leaders, Pregnant women, Breastfeeding mothers with their babies and Market Women Association.
The MNCHW complements routine health services by ensuring that basic health care reaches all mothers and children. The health services and supplies provided, among others, are routine immunization, Vitamin A supplements, , deworming tablets, screening for malnutrition, iron folic acid for pregnant women among others.
