The Honorable Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Timothy Ojomah, has commended cashew farmers in the state for their relentless efforts in driving the growth and development of the agricultural sector.
While receiving the farmers in his office, he acknowledged that cashew farming has not only strengthened food security but has also created employment opportunities and stimulated economic growth. He emphasized the government’s recognition of farmers’ vital role and reiterated its commitment to supporting them.
Hon. Ojomah highlighted various government initiatives designed to benefit cashew farmers, including training and capacity building, improved market access, and the provision of modern marketplaces. He assured them that the government would continue to facilitate connections with both local and international buyers at competitive rates, positioning Kogi State as a leading producer of cashew in Nigeria.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of the Kogi State Agricultural Development Project, Dr. Bello George Ogrima, stated that properly managed cashew farming could generate substantial revenue. He further noted that the government has implemented mandatory branding of cashew bags with the Kogi State logo to curb adulteration and unauthorized buyer infiltration into the cashew market.
Dr. Ogrima reassured the farmers of the government’s continued support, pledging to provide the necessary resources and infrastructure to enhance productivity and competitiveness in the industry.
Speaking on behalf of the farmers, the State Chairman of the Cashew Farmers Association, Comrade David Idaikwu, expressed profound appreciation to the administration of Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo for its unwavering commitment to promoting agriculture, particularly cashew production. He emphasized how these efforts contribute to food security and economic development.
However, Comrade Idaikwu also highlighted key challenges faced by cashew farmers, including herder attacks, inadequate storage facilities, and limited access to modern technology. He noted that these challenges hinder the farmers’ ability to maximize their potential and compete globally.
He, therefore, appealed for government intervention and support to address these issues, stressing that overcoming them is crucial to unlocking the full potential of the cashew industry in Kogi State.
