The Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has paid glowing tribute to the late former Governor, Prince Abubakar Audu, during the 10th Memorial Anniversary Prayer held on Saturday at Audu’s country home in Ogbonicha, Ofu Local Government Area.
Governor Ododo, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, described the anniversary as a solemn moment to reflect on the life of a leader whose vision and sacrifices laid the foundational pillars of modern Kogi State. He noted that a decade after his passing, Prince Audu’s courage, foresight and unwavering commitment to the progress of the state remain deeply etched in the hearts of Kogi people.
According to him, “Many leaders may leave office, but only a few leave behind a permanent imprint on the lives of their people. Prince Abubakar Audu was one of such rare leaders. His legacy continues to speak loudly.”
Governor Ododo commended the Audu family for keeping alive the memory of a man widely celebrated as a pathfinder and symbol of hope, and appreciated his Team for initiating the memorial, the first of its kind in the state’s history; describing it as a demonstration of leadership rooted in respect, unity, and gratitude to those who contributed immensely to Kogi’s development.
He urged citizens to draw inspiration from the late Audu’s life of service, stressing that the memorial should renew collective strength, promote peace, and unify the state across political, ethnic, and religious lines.
Prayers were offered for the peaceful repose of the former governor and for divine guidance for the state’s leadership as it works to actualize his long-held dreams for a prosperous Kogi.
Speaking on behalf of the family, the Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shaibu Abubakar Audu, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Ododo for standing with the family and ensuring the success of the memorial ceremony. He described the governor’s presence as a gesture that reinforces the value of honouring past heroes.
The anniversary drew prominent Nigerians, political leaders, traditional rulers, and a mammoth crowd of supporters who filled the expansive compound of the late icon.
Prince Abubakar Audu, the first Executive Governor of Kogi State, is remembered for a legacy marked by far-reaching developmental projects, including the establishment of Kogi State University, Anyigba; Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja; the construction of the Ganaja–Ajaokuta Road; and the creation of the Kogi State Broadcasting Corporation, among many other achievements.
