The location has created a lot of problems such as accidents and traffic congestion.

There was a definite need for a new market that will take into cognizance safety and accessibility. It will also ensure that all the 7 markets scattered around Lokoja are put under one roof.

This will make the city cleaner, safer and smarter.

LOKOJA URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT (LURP)

The Lokoja Urban Renewal Project (LURP) is an initiative to which Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is committed to.

The Ultra Modern Market is expected to add to the aesthetics of the Lokoja Township as well as help in environmental sanitation. It will create a massive hub for commercial activities to thrive.

But the idea of the Administration is that Urban Renewal starts with Rural Development. Until people in rural areas are more comfortable, urban population will continue to rise.

To this end, the administration has embarked on massive rural development such as opening up of rural roads, investments in agriculture and healthcare and making schools in rural areas better.

In the last 11 months, Kogi State has has become a construction hub. This is part of the Urban Renewal Project Plan.

The Lokoja Ultra Modern Market is poised to redefine market architecture in Nigeria.

THEN, WHAT HAPPENS TO THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET?

The International Market will be converted to structures to serve as the Kogi State Warehouse and also house the Commodity Exchange Commission.

The State Government is planning a massive off-taker policy in the Agricultural Sector in order to oil the value chains.

So the International Market won’t be a waste but at the same time, won’t be a killer point.

WHY WAS THE INTERNAL MARKET WRONGLY LOCATED? SHOULD WE BLAME THE ADMINISTRATION THAT BUILT IT ?

The idea of having an international market in Lokoja was a well thought-out idea to leverage the location of the market for commercial activities.

We should commend the administration that came up with the noble idea. On the location, the administration did not probably factor in the possible exponential growth being witnessed in Lokoja.

Government is a Continuum and the Ododo Administration taken all factors into consideration in order to ensure the right thing is done.

WHEN DO WE EXPECT TO HAVE A BRAND NEW LOKOJA ULTRA MODERN MARKET?

It is expected that the project will be delivered in 36 months. SABC has a known reputation for doing good jobs.
