The Kogi State Government, in collaboration with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has flagged off a training program on the computation of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The initiative is part of a nationwide effort to provide reliable economic data that will aid planning, attract investors, and foster sustainable development.

The Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning, Hon. Asiwaju Idris (FCA), represented by Director Planning (Micro) department, Mallam Musa, reiterated the importance of accurate economic statistics in shaping policies and ensuring long-term growth. He emphasized that GDP computation is a vital tool in assessing the economic progress of the state, and Kogi is fully committed to ensuring its data remains up-to-date.

“In 2019, Kogi State, through its Bureau of Statistics, successfully computed its first GDP covering the period of 2013-2017. This was a significant milestone, as it allowed us to understand our economic standing and plan accordingly. In 2024, we are building on that foundation by updating our GDP figures to 2023 with the support of the National Bureau of Statistics,” he stated.

Hon. Idris underscored the need for timely, reliable, and accurate economic data, noting that it plays a crucial role in government decision-making.

“To have robust and effective planning, we must base our policies on data-driven insights. This GDP computation will not only reflect the true value of our economy but will also serve as a blueprint for future development. Investors rely on such statistics to make informed decisions, and as a state looking to attract investment, this exercise is non-negotiable,” he added.

The Commissioner also urged enumerators and stakeholders to take the exercise seriously, emphasizing that the success of the program depends on their diligence.

“This is not just about numbers; it is about the future of Kogi State. The hard work we put in today will determine how we are perceived by investors and economic planners tomorrow. I implore every stakeholder to see this as a service to the state and commit wholeheartedly to the process,” he urged.

The State Officer of the NBS, Mr. Aledare Emmanuel, in his goodwill message, emphasized that the GDP computation exercise is being carried out across all 36 states. He highlighted that GDP serves as a monetary measure of goods and services within a state and is a key determinant of economic strength.

“The GDP is a reflection of a state’s economic vitality. Now that the Kogi State Government is seeking investors, these statistics will play a critical role in attracting them. The NBS understands that GDP is fundamental to national growth, and that is why we are committed to ensuring every state updates its figures,” he said.

Mr. Emmanuel revealed that Nigeria’s national GDP growth rate for Q4 stands at 3.84%, and efforts like this will help improve the overall economic outlook.

“This move is meant to sensitize states on the importance of economic competitiveness. When states work to enhance their GDP, they not only attract investors but also create an enabling environment for industries already operating within their territories,” he explained.

He cautioned enumerators against fabricating data, stating that NBS will closely monitor and follow up on the process to ensure credibility. He further stressed that Kogi State has the potential to rank first in the nation due to its vast mineral resources and fertile land. However, he noted that the lack of documented records has been a challenge, making this GDP computation exercise more critical than ever.

The training, which will last for 4 days, aims to equip enumerators with the technical skills required for accurate data collection.

The State Statistician-General, Mrs. Ayo-Alani Irewole, also reaffirmed that business establishments drive the economy, and their input in this exercise will help showcase the true economic strength of Kogi State.

The Commissioner officially declared the training open, urging all participants to dedicate themselves to the exercise, as it will shape the future of the state’s economy.
