In an effort to elevate the quality of service provided by officers in the Administrative and Executive cadre, the Kogi State Office of the Head of Civil Service recently conducted a specialized training program for its officers.

The intensive 4-day in-house training, led by fifteen (15) experienced resource persons, aimed to share their expertise and knowledge with the officers to improve their skills and capabilities.

The training covered a wide range of topics including Work Ethics and Values in the Public Service, the Roles of Financial Regulators in Public Service, Misconduct/Serious Misconduct, Speech/Report Writing, and Office Management in Civil Service Contexts.

During the opening ceremony of the training program, Mr. Elijah Evinemi FCA, the Head of Service, highlighted the state government’s dedication to capacity building and excellence in public service. He emphasized the importance of enhancing the capabilities of civil servants to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.

Mr. Evinemi expressed his gratitude to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo FCA for approving and funding the training, underscoring its role in reforming the civil service sector. He reiterated the government’s commitment to reforming the civil service through optimal performance.

Furthermore, Mr. Evinemi revealed that the state government had previously sponsored officers in the Administrative, Executive, and Data Processing cadres to prestigious institutions such as the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru (NIPSS), and the Center for Management Development (CMD) for further capacity building.

He encouraged participants to actively engage with the training sessions to effectively apply the knowledge gained and enhance their performance.

Hajiya Mariam Muhammed, Deputy Director of Training at the Office of the Head of Civil Service, also played a key role in organizing and facilitating the training program.

The Deputy Director Training, Office of the Head of Civil Service, explained that, the content of the training manual is tailored towards the required and needed knowledge to enhance productivity skills and competencies, as well as empowering them to becoming efficient and incorruptible.

She thanked the Head of Service for his proactive ness and determination in ensuring the success of this initiative.

Mr Sunday Odeh, Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, one of the facilitators, stressed the importance of financial regulations and how it affects public service, noting that, “understanding these regulations enables Civil servants to manage resources efficiently”

Mrs Ann Onoja, Director Establishment, Office of the Head of Civil Service, with the topic, “Leadership and Emotional Intelligence” emphasize the need for leaders to utilize emotional intelligence in accessing team member’s well-being to improve direction for optimal performance. “A good leader shows gentleness, kindness and empathy, understanding follower’s challenges ”

It is worth noting that, this training program marks a significant step towards transforming Kogi state civil service sector.
