The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, has denounced Gender-Based Violence as a hindrance to societal progress and advancement.

Hon. Kingsley Fanwo expressed this sentiment during a visit from the Directorate of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) at the Ministry of Justice in his office in Lokoja.

He emphasised the urgent need for society to take action against GBV, stating that a discriminatory society cannot thrive.

To combat GBV effectively, he stressed the importance of creating an environment that promotes equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of gender.

Hon. Fanwo also suggested extending awareness campaigns beyond couples to schools, in order to educate young people about the dangers of GBV.

He urged the directorate to leverage respected institutions in society to spread awareness and discourage GBV.

Hon. Fanwo highlighted that any form of discrimination constitutes psychological violence, and society must actively address it.

He commended the directorate for its inclusive approach, emphasising the need to provide equal support and opportunities for all genders, as GBV affects individuals regardless of gender.

He underscored the importance of raising awareness, educating the public, and identifying instances of GBV.

Hon. Fanwo reiterated his commitment and that of His Excellency, Alhaji Usman Ododo, to promoting gender equality and equity.

He described Governor Ododo as a proponent of fairness and progress, pledging continued collaboration with the directorate to achieve these goals.

He assured the directorate of the ministry’s full support in using the media houses, e.g. the Radio Kogi, The Graphic, Kogi Strides Magazines, The highly rated state website, social media and others to disseminate the information to the nooks and crannies of the state and even beyond.

The Director of the Directorate of GBV, Barrister Stanley Atule in his speech, commended His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo for his unwavering support and commitment towards the giant infrastructural developments in the state, appealing to the ministry for support to ensure proper enlightenment on how to mitigate GBV.

In his welcome address, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Yakubu Abdul, emphasised the importance of proper sensitisations in mitigating GBV, stressing that GBV is a critical issue that should be tackled well.
