Ahmed Usman Ododo is a Nigerian politician and accountant who currently serves as the Governor of Kogi State.

 

Born on February 7, 1982, in Okene, Kogi State, Ododo hails from the Ebira ethnic group. He has a very strong educational background, holding a degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the same university. Additionally, he has a PhD from the University of Lagos.

 

Born into a family of esteem, with his father, Alhaji Ahmed Ododo, being a well-known businessman and community leader, and his mother, Hajiya Fatima Ododo, a respected educator and philanthropist.

 

Ododo’s educational background includes Federal Government College in Okene and Ahmadu Bello University. He served as the Auditor General for Local Government Areas in Kogi State before becoming governor.

 

He won the Kogi State gubernatorial election on November 11, 2023, with 446,237 votes, and was declared governor-elect on November 12, 2023 thereby assuming office on January 27, 2024, succeeding the former Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello. Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration has since then prioritized transparency, accountability, and good governance.

 

Known for his humility, philanthropy, and commitment to public service, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration, which began in January 2024, has focused on a comprehensive revitalization of the primary Healthcare sector in Kogi State.

 

Key successes within his tenure include the commissioning of numerous revitalized healthcare facilities, significant investment in infrastructure and equipment, and the implementation of social welfare and human resource initiatives.

 

Specific achievements during this two years of his administration includes; In November 2025, Governor Ododo commissioned the first phase of 80 revitalized PHCs across the state, which are designed to offer 24-hour, efficient, and effective healthcare services to rural communities.

 

The government under his administration approved over ₦7 billion in March 2024 to rehabilitate 88 PHCs, adding to over 70 others already undergoing renovation. The overall goal is to remodel more than 150 PHCs statewide, ensuring at least three functional facilities per local government area.

 

Additionally, facilities are being equipped with essential medical tools, including oxygen concentrators, mobile X-ray machines, patient monitors, and reliable power sources like solar installations and generators, to support uninterrupted service delivery.

 

Human Resource Incentives and Recruitment: To address staffing shortages and the emigration of health workers, the administration approved a substantial monthly incentive of ₦300,000 for medical doctors while a multi-year recruitment plan (2025-2028) is also being implemented, and outstanding PHC personnel have been rewarded for excellence.

 

Further more, there was the Launch of Health Insurance Programs where”Access to Care Initiative” was introduced to provide free health insurance for vulnerable populations, including over 76,000 pensioners, local government staff, and students, aiming for universal health coverage.

 

Additionally, Plans were announced to rehabilitate and upgrade the state’s central medical store to an e-pharma warehouse, allowing the government to procure drugs directly from manufacturers at lower costs for efficient distribution to facilities.

 

The administration emphasizes the role of communities and traditional leaders in protecting health infrastructure to ensure sustainability and attract further investment.

 

It is of almost importance to also note that the successes attached to the 2025 Rubella Immunization Coordination and Campaign across the 21 Local government Areas of the state is recognized by partners and Stakeholders in the the health sector as equal to none.

 

The Kogi State Primary Health care Development Agency has never had it so well since assumption of office of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration as under him, the Agency in the state climbed from the 18th position in 2023 and 2024 to the 10th position in the 2025 SBM Health Preparedness Index (HPI).

 

All these were made possible through the appointment of Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza as Kogi State commissioner of Health and Dr. Muazu Omeiza Musa as the Executive Director, Kogi State Primary Health care Development Agency, upon whose shoulders the growth of the state health sector rests.

 

It is expected that the remaining two years of this administration and beyond will still see the Agency becoming better grounded for optimum performance.
