The Sugarcane Farmers and Producers Association has appealed to the government for strategic support to boost sugarcane production and strengthen the value chain, citing the crop’s potential to enhance food security, create jobs, and contribute to economic growth.
Addressing members of the association at a recent meeting, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Timothy Ojomah, emphasized the need for proper organization and institutional guidance for the association. He disclosed that the ministry would work closely with the group to constitute an executive committee (Exco) under the guidance of the Ministry, to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective coordination.
Hon. Ojomah further stated that a key priority would be to identify and organize farmers with comparative advantage particularly in areas where soil quality, climate, and water resources are most suitable for sugarcane cultivation. According to him, mapping these zones will enable targeted interventions, improved yields, and better access to inputs, extension services, and markets.
In his response, the Chairman of the association, Hon. Abdulaziz Oricha Shuaibu, expressed appreciation for the government’s engagement and commitment. He assured the Commissioner and the ministry of the association’s readiness to cooperate fully with all directives aimed at repositioning the sector.
Hon. Shuaibu noted that with government support especially in land preparation, improved seedlings, irrigation, and access to credit, sugarcane farmers would be better empowered to scale production. He added that a well-structured association would also help farmers speak with one voice, attract private sector investment, and reduce reliance on sugar imports.
The meeting ended with a renewed commitment from both the government and the association to work collaboratively toward building a sustainable and competitive sugarcane industry.
