The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has formally issued the Notice of Election for the conduct of Chairmanship and Councillorship elections across the 21 Local Government Areas of the state.
The elections are scheduled to hold on Saturday, 17th October 2026.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Mamman Nda Eri, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Lokoja on Wednesday.
Hon. Eri stated that “the notice was issued in accordance with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the relevant provisions of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2025.”
This declaration signifies KOSIEC’s preparedness and the formal commencement of the 2026 Local Government Electoral process in the state.
According to him, the publication of the Notice of Election fulfills the statutory requirement mandating electoral bodies to issue such notices not later than 360 days before the date fixed for the elections.
He disclosed that a comprehensive timetable and schedule of activities for the elections—detailing specific dates for the conduct of party primaries, submission of candidates’ lists, publication of nominated candidates, commencement and end of campaigns, and other pre-election activities will be released by the Commission on Friday, 24th October 2025.
The Chairman further emphasized that only political parties duly registered and recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be eligible to sponsor candidates for the elections, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the KOSIEC Law.
He urged all political parties, aspirants, and other stakeholders to strictly adhere to the electoral timetable, laws, and the Commission’s guidelines to ensure free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections across the state.
Hon. Eri also stated that the place of delivery of nomination papers for the elective offices of Chairmen and Councillors shall be the Commission’s headquarters, located at No. 1 Ado Ibrahim Road, GRA, Lokoja.
