The Kogi State Government has launched a capacity-building workshop designed to enhance the preparedness and response capabilities of health workers in the state’s oil-producing communities.
Inaugurating the workshop, the Permanent Secretary of Kogi State Ministry of Health Mr Steven Momoh, representing the Honourable Commissioner for Health Dr Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, highlighted the timeliness of the training in light of the escalating health and safety challenges linked to oil exploration and production activities. He stressed that oil-producing regions face distinct risks, including industrial accidents, environmental hazards, and other emergencies that necessitate swift and coordinated response systems.
He underscored the critical role of first responders in these environments, emphasizing their importance in saving lives and mitigating the impact of crises.
“A skilled response team can significantly mitigate the effects of industrial accidents, environmental hazards, and other crises. The role of a first responder is crucial in oil-producing areas where emergencies can be frequent and devastating,” he stated.
He recalled that Kogi State made history in October 2022 by becoming the first state in Northern Nigeria to be officially recognized as an oil-producing state, following the discovery of oil in commercial quantities. This milestone, he noted, further underscores the necessity of equipping the state’s health workforce with the requisite knowledge and skills to address emerging challenges.
The Commissioner explained that the training will cover essential life support and trauma response techniques, obstetric emergency management, evacuation protocols, and integrated simulation exercises.
“Through these modules, participants will not only acquire technical skills but also develop teamwork, coordination, and communication abilities essential for effective emergency response,” he added.
