The Kogi State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) commemorated International Women’s Day with a powerful gathering of voices advocating for gender equality and the dismantling of societal stereotypes.
The theme for the event, “Breaking Stereotypes: Challenging Societal Expectations and Embracing Inequality”, resonated with calls for action, unity, and empowerment, highlighting the significant strides made while acknowledging the persistent challenges women face.
The Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Comfort Egwaba in her keynote address, emphasized the progress achieved but stressed the urgent need to “accelerate action” towards achieving true gender parity. She called for the promotion of inclusive policies, the engagement of men as allies, and the rigorous monitoring of progress. She also highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to improve access to information, resources, and literacy for women. She lauded the Kogi State Governor’s dedication to laying a solid foundation for women’s advancement.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Fatima Momoh ably represented said women are integral to development and as such,their place must be maintained. She appreciated the governor from giving women a safe space to thrive in all spheres.
Earlier, Comrade Stella Edoka, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Kogi, delivered a compelling welcome speech, asserting that women are not merely contributors but the “backbone” of society. She acknowledged the numerous barriers women have overcome and encouraged young schoolgirls to be brave and assert their rights. Edoka emphasized the crucial role of women’s advocacy in fostering inclusivity.
Hajia Nanahauwa Yusuf, the Director-General of Radio Kogi, in her goodwill message, urged women to unite in the fight against gender inequality and to support each other. Similarly, Hajia Habibat Umar, Chairperson of Women Committed Labour, celebrated the achievements of women in empowerment and advocacy, highlighting their impact on governance across various sectors.
Comrade Ann Olurinde, representing the National Executive Vice President, Comrade Chizoba Ogbeche, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need to break down negative stereotypes entrenched in culture that hinder gender equity. She urged that advocacy efforts be directed towards grassroots women, who are particularly vulnerable to social vices, and called for a challenge to the power of patriarchy.
Bar. OluwaKemi Omeiza, Chairperson of FIDA, encouraged young girls to pursue their passions, resist cultural stereotypes, ask questions, and embrace their uniqueness. Mr. Hamza Aliu, Executive Director of the Initiative for Grassroots Advancement, challenged women to venture into male-dominated fields and showcase their problem-solving abilities.
Furthermore, CPI Eunice Abimbola Agbogun called for unwavering dedication to the advocacy for freedom and collaborative efforts. SA Media to Governor Usman Ododo, Hon. Ismaila Isah, reiterated the Kogi State government’s commitment to supporting women’s advancement in all spheres of life.
Idris Murainu, Chairman of Kongonet, assured the gathering that the NGO sector would continue to support the advocacy for gender equity.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to dismantle societal barriers and create a more equitable future for women in Kogi and Nigeria.
