In response to the US government’s decision to pause funding for HIV programs in Nigeria, the Kogi State Ministry of Health convened a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss the implications and potential solutions.

The meeting, led by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Dorcas Omeneke Enehe, who was represented by Dr. Francis Akpa, Director of Public Health, aimed to address the potential impact of this funding pause on the country’s HIV program.

In attendance were various key stakeholders, including government officials, healthcare professionals, and representatives from implementing partners. Concerns were raised regarding the possible medical emergency that could arise due to the lack of funding for the HIV program.

Dr. Ayo Olayemi, Chief Medical Director of Kogi State Hospitals Management Board, expressed confidence in the meeting’s outcomes. He highlighted the state government’s commitment to taking ownership of the HIV program and ensuring its continuity, even without external funding.

The stakeholders stressed the importance of developing a sustainable plan to guarantee the uninterrupted provision of HIV services, especially for those living with the virus. Key issues identified included the necessity for concrete action plans, the integration of HIV care into mainstream healthcare services, and the enhancement of healthcare personnel’s capacity through training.

To tackle these challenges, stakeholders proposed various solutions, such as the development of action plans, the integration of HIV care into mainstream healthcare, capacity building for healthcare personnel, community involvement in healthcare decisions, and exploring health insurance options for patients.

The stakeholders meeting marked a significant milestone in addressing the obstacles posed by the US government’s funding pause. It underscored the collective commitment to ensuring the continuity and effectiveness of HIV services in Nigeria.
