As part of his demonstration of continuity in governance and commitment to human capital development, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, on Monday commissioned the GYB Model Secondary School in Nagazi, declaring it a cornerstone in the state’s march toward educational excellence and sustainable development.
The project, is widely seen as a strategic consolidation of the bold educational reforms initiated by former Governor, Yahaya Adoza Bello, whose administration pioneered the concept to bridge access gaps and raise standards across the state.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Ododo described the project as a “defining step” in securing the future of Kogi through deliberate investment in quality education, noting that the facility represents more than infrastructure, it embodies a long-term vision to build a generation equipped with knowledge, character, and leadership capacity.
He emphasized that his administration is intentionally building on the solid foundation laid by his predecessor, acknowledging that the Mega Schools initiative conceived under Bello has become a transformative platform for expanding access to modern, high-quality learning environments across Kogi State.
“Leadership is about continuity and consolidation,” the Governor stated, affirming that his government remains committed to sustaining and expanding policies that deliver real value to the people.
The facility boasts 18 classrooms with multiple arms, a well-equipped library, modern science laboratories, a fully functional ICT centre, and a 326-capacity Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre designed to meet global standards. It also features standard sports facilities, improved Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) systems, and a secure, fenced environment conducive for learning. Currently accommodating over 1,700 students, the school is expected to significantly enhance access to quality secondary education in the region while promoting uniform standards and improved learning outcomes.
The event attracted top government functionaries and education stakeholders, including the Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, whose presence reve the growing collaboration between the Federal Government and sub-national entities in driving educational reforms.
Governor Ododo also used the occasion to commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his sweeping economic reforms, noting that increased revenue accruing to states has enabled Kogi to invest more meaningfully in critical sectors.
According to him, funds previously lost to inefficiencies are now being channeled into impactful projects such as schools, hospitals, and primary healthcare centres, directly improving the lives of citizens.
Reinforcing his administration’s priorities, the Governor stated that education remains central to Kogi’s development agenda, with sustained investments in infrastructure, policy direction, and institutional strengthening already yielding visible results.
He highlighted ongoing progress at the tertiary level, including improved accreditation of courses and enhanced capacity in state-owned institutions such as Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba; Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara; and Kogi State University, Kabba, two of which now have accreditation to train medical professionals.
Governor Ododo further stressed the importance of equipping students with 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and strong foundations in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), positioning them as future drivers of development.
He expressed appreciation to stakeholders, contractors, and host communities for their contributions to the project, urging residents to take ownership of the facility and safeguard it for future generations.
Addressing students, teachers, and administrators, the Governor called for dedication, discipline, and commitment, noting that the success of the investment ultimately depends on how well it is utilized.

The Governor later moved to Okebukun in the Western Senatorial District of the State to commission a similar project, called for the custodianship of the project on the part of indigenes.
