In a pivotal move to enhance Nigeria’s health system, the Kogi State Government actively participated in the 5th Annual Breakfast Meeting in Lagos. This event was organized by the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum in partnership with the Africa Resource Center for Excellence in Supply Chain Management (ARC-ESM), the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMG-MAN), and the Forum of Heads of Drug Management Agencies (DMA).
The meeting convened distinguished participants, including health commissioners from various states. Notably, Kogi’s Coordinating Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, and the Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Drugs Management Agency, Pharm. Salamat Onize Ibrahim, were in attendance, alongside other key stakeholders in Nigeria’s health and supply chain sectors.
The primary objective of the meeting was to align stakeholders on a unified vision and commit to actionable solutions for enhancing procurement processes. A consensus was reached to implement a Group Purchasing mechanism with local pharmaceutical manufacturers, representing a significant advancement towards collective procurement.
The Kogi State delegation expressed strong appreciation for the meeting, recognizing it as a bold initiative aimed at improving procurement efficiency, supporting local pharmaceutical production, and accelerating Nigeria’s progress towards pharmaceutical self-sufficiency.
This collaborative initiative highlights the increasing momentum in public-private partnerships focused on establishing sustainable systems that ensure access to affordable and quality-assured medicines. By pooling resources through collective purchasing, Drug Management Agencies can negotiate more favorable prices, terms, and conditions with suppliers, resulting in numerous benefits, including cost savings.
