As part of the colourful activities marking the 2025 Kogi State Civil Service Week, the Office of the Head of Civil Service squared off against the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the State (SGS) in a spirited novelty football match with the Head of Civil Service team securing a narrow 1–0 victory.
The novelty match which was played at the Lokoja Confluence Stadium, attracted an enthusiastic crowd of civil servants, sports lovers, and government functionaries who turned out to witness the friendly rivalry between the two offices.
In attendance were top-tier government officials, including Permanent Secretaries, Directors, and other senior civil servants, whose cheers and applause added to the festive atmosphere. Also present was the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Monday Ayenebe, whose presence underscored the State Government’s commitment to promoting sports as a tool for unity, wellness, and social cohesion among the workforce.
The lone goal of the match came in the first half, following a well-coordinated team play that sent the crowd into loud celebration. Despite spirited attempts by the SGS team to equalise in the second half, the Head of Civil Service side held firm, showcasing both skill and defensive discipline until the final whistle.
In a brief ceremony after the match, the Head of Civil Service, Dr. Elijah Evinemi, FCA, presented gold medals and the winner’s cup to the triumphant Head of Civil Service team, while the SGS team received silver medals in recognition of their valiant performance. Smiles, applause, and photo sessions marked the prize-giving, further reinforcing the friendly spirit of the competition.
The game ended in handshakes, embraces, and mutual congratulations, perfectly reflecting the unity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie that define the Civil Service Week.
The organisers noted that the novelty match was more than just a display of sporting talent; it was a symbolic demonstration of teamwork, healthy competition, and the shared commitment to a vibrant and cohesive Kogi State Civil Service.
