The Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Asiwaju Idris, has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening synergy with the Ministry of Livestock Development in driving revenue generation, job creation, and food security through strategic initiatives that align with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s economic policies

Speaking during an interactive technical session with ministries, departments, and agencies, Hon. Idris described the livestock sector as one of the most promising frontiers for growth in Kogi State’s economy.

He noted that the Ministry of Livestock Development, recently established by the Ododo administration, represents a bold step toward repositioning agriculture as a major source of internal revenue. “Livestock is a viable ministry capable of generating revenue for the state, creating employment opportunities, and enhancing our ability to execute capital projects,” he stated.

According to the Commissioner, the session provided an avenue to review expectations from the ministry, especially from the revenue angle, which remains critical to capital development. “We have discussed some challenges and identified what needs to be done differently to achieve results. It’s a ministry that can even help us earn foreign exchange. Based on what we’ve discussed, we can see clearly what must be done and we will achieve it,” he said.

Hon. Idris further explained that the livestock sector holds the key to addressing food insecurity and reducing conflicts between farmers and herders. “If properly developed, livestock can help resolve the challenges that have affected both herders and farmers, ensuring peaceful coexistence and sustainable food production,” he emphasized.

He commended Governor Ododo for establishing the ministry and for providing the necessary policy framework and support to make livestock a sustainable growth driver for the state. “The vision is clear to turn livestock into a tool for revenue generation, food security, and rural development,” he added.

The Ministry of Livestock Development is expected to work closely with other relevant sectors to harness the full potential of Kogi’s agricultural landscape, build modern value chains, and position the state as a leader in livestock-based enterprise in Nigeria.

The Commissioner stated that as the state continues to diversify its economy and strengthen its internal revenue base, livestock development stands out as a strategic pillar one capable of transforming rural livelihoods, attracting investment, and ensuring that the state’s economy remains productive, inclusive, and self-sustaining.
