The Hon. Commissioner for Commerce and Industry,*Hon. Muhammed Muktar Shuaibu*, has assured the leadership of Innovative Oil Palm Cooperative of the State’s readiness to support the establishment of a mega palm oil project in the state.
He described it as a strategic initiative that aligns with Kogi State Governor, *Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo’s* vision for industrial growth and economic diversification.
While addressing the Cooperative, led by its Chairman, *Dr. Maji Okpanachi*, Hon. Shuaibu reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to standing where necessary to help them opportunities through the Banks & other development channels.
“This project has the potential to redefine Kogi State’s industrial landscape. We are fully ready to support it and ensure its success,” he stated.
The Cooperative, in their presentation, highlighted findings from their extensive field visits across Kogi State, noting that the state possesses vast hectares of oil palm plantations capable of sustaining a large-scale refinery.
Dr. Okpanachi emphasized that some individual members have plantations spanning over 100 hectares, and several underutilized government-owned plantations could also be leveraged to boost production.
“Kogi State can host the first mega palm oil refinery in North Central Nigeria. We are prepared, and we only need the State’s backing to make it a reality,” he said.
They identified key factors supporting the project’s viability: abundant raw materials, a ready market for processed products, and a clear strategy to establish a refinery that would end post-harvest losses, create jobs, and generate significant revenue for the state.
The Cooperative also plan on seeking a development support fund to empower farmers and a larger financing plan for the refinery, assuring the Commissioner of a detailed recovery framework to ensure sustainability.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Shuaibu commended the Cooperative’s vision and proactive approach, while also emphasizing the government’s willingness to collaborate with serious investors to unlock the state’s industrial potential.
“This Ministry will not relent in supporting initiatives that uplift our people and strengthen our economy,” he added.
The meeting ended with mutual optimism about the project’s prospects and a shared determination to work together to deliver a refinery that would serve as a legacy for both the government and the people of Kogi State.
