Kogi State’s Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project has achieved a significant milestone with the harvest of its first and second Greenhouse-grown Bell Pepper crops in Ageva, Okene Local Government Area. This groundbreaking achievement marks a major step in the State’s agricultural development and climate resilience efforts.
The Project aims to enhance agricultural productivity, facilitate technology transfer, and improve the livelihoods of women and youths. The Greenhouse facility in Ageva, alongside the Cucumber facility at the Federal University Lokoja, testifies to His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to boosting agricultural productivity and promoting climate-smart agriculture in the State.
According to Barrister Ladi Ahmed Jatto, Project Coordinator, Kogi ACReSAL, “the harvest symbolizes growth, resilience and knowledge transfer”. She further stated that His Excellency approved the establishment of Greenhouses in the 3 Senatorial Districts, with Idah LGA being the next in line.
Beyond doubt, this achievement demonstrates Kogi State’s potential to become a model for agricultural innovation and sustainability in Nigeria, as we are gradually and steadily growing what we eat, and also meeting the needs of markets outside the State.
Beneficiaries of the program include women farmers from local communities and students. The two maiden harvests yielded a total of 200 kilograms of Bell Peppers, with weekly harvests expected before replanting another crop.
