In celebration of World Engineering Day, observed annually on March 4, engineers across Kogi State gathered at the State Ministry of Works in Lokoja on Wednesday. Representing the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Engr. Mohammed Ahovi Yusuf, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Engr. Abdulsalam Mohammed Sagir, welcomed the engineers. He emphasized the critical role of engineers as problem-solvers in society, stating that the well-being of citizens depends on their work. “Engineers make life functional and easier for everyone, and as such, more is expected from this noble profession,” Sagir said. He also called on parents to encourage their children, especially girls, to pursue careers in engineering. Engr. Emmanuel Adanu, Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), Lokoja Branch, expressed gratitude for the warm reception. He highlighted this year’s theme, “Sustainable Future Through Innovation and Digitization,” noting its relevance in a world increasingly reliant on digital innovation for improved living standards. Adanu elaborated on the concept of smart engineering, describing it as a “superhero technology” for sustainability. “It involves leveraging cutting-edge tools like Artificial Intelligence and data analytics to optimize processes, reduce waste, and enhance eco-efficiency,” he explained. “This includes predictive maintenance, energy optimization, and promoting a circular economy through designs that encourage reuse and recycling.” Also addressing the gathering, the immediate past Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Engr. E.O.
