Stakeholders Shore up Sensitization Campaign to Curb Lassa Fever and Cholera Outbreak in Kogi State

The Federal Ministry Of Environment  in collaboration with stakeholders at the state Ministry of Environment, Local Government Environmental Health  officers along with the state Ministry of Health embarked on a 2 Day National Campaign on Environmental  Sanitation Response  Intervention  to Cholera  and Lassa fever outbreak in Egha community,Idah LGA,Kogi State.

The Chief Environment Officer,Mr Aghogho  Ebetsere while flagging off  the sensitization  campaign  said,the sensitization  exercise became imperative following the spread of the viral diseases around the globe,hence the need to create awareness of the deadly diseases.

He indicated that the sensitization is targeted at community leaders as they can effectively pass the messages down to the grassroot.

“In  Nigeria,cases have continuously  been reported.Hence He advised  citizens to imbibe good sanitary  hygiene practises and take preventive  and control measures”

Mrs khadija Muhammed,who represented the state Ministry of Health(State Epidiomologist) explained that Cholera  which is a sanitation and hygiene  enabled diseases is an acute diarrhoea  infection caused by ingestion of unwholesome food  or water contaminated with the bacterium vibrio Cholera  due to poor  personal conditions compounded  by lack of portable water  supply while the mode of transmission  of lassa fever is from rat to human and also from human to human.

She urged the people to maintain healthy sanitary culture to curb the spread of Cholera and lassafever.Adding that the  State Ministry of Health is adequately prepared to handle reported cases Hence the need to report any incidence to the Disease Surveillance and Notification officer.

Also speaking at the event, Mr. Micheal olatunde who represented the state Ministry  of Environment commended the effort of the  Federal  Ministry of Environment for organising a timely response Intervention  and collaborating with stakeholders to combat the spread of the viral dseases.

He said; The  State Ministry of Environment is saddled with the responsibility and is committed to ensuring a clean and healthy environment  for all kogites.Adding that sanitation is a collective responsibility of all.

In their various lectures,the Environmental  Health officers described the two viral diseases  as deadly while educating  the community on the mode of transmission,they called for the promotion of good environmental and personal hygiene practices.

The Head of the Host community, Chief Amodu Gambo Ibrahim  thanked the stakeholders who have collaborated with the Federal Ministry Of Environment to organise  the sensitization  campaign exercise in Idah Local Government  Area.He extended his gratitude  to the state Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for His Genuine concern towards  the health of kogites.

In their separate  remark,chief Amodu Gambo and Hajia Mario Angulu (President of the Market Women Association reiterated their willingness to work with the Environmental  Health Officers as well spread the message to the people to curb the spread of the viral diseases.

The Environmental Health Unit Officers were later dispatched to the communities in the LGA markets, schools and churches for the enlightenment and sensitization campaign while proper ways of hand washing and other preventive methods were demonstrated and hand sanitisers were presented to the people.
