The Kogi State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has the mandate of identifying and developing sports for the State and also identify and develop talents in various sporting activities who will not only win laurels in all sporting championships – Local, National and International, but also develop the minds and character of young persons in the State who form bulk of the majority of the State’s population.

The Ministry has the mandate of engaging youths in positive ventures through various skill acquisition and youth empowerment  programmes, giving the youths inspirations and guardians required to set goals and achieve them, helping them to raise success consciousness, through success attitude development that leads to capacity building, creation and enjoyment of wealth on a lasting basis.

i.        2016 International Youth Day

The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in August 2016 celebrated International Youth Day. It’s a United Nation’s Programme to celebrate youths allover the world. Activities engaged by the Kogi    youths to celebrate the day includes: Peace Walk, to draw awareness   for the need for peace in the State, and symposium that centred on youth against crime and social vices.

ii.   CJN Sports Competition 2016

The 22nd Edition of the Chief Justice of Nigeria Games, known as the Judiciary Games was sponsored by the State Government. The games which took place from the 29th August – 7th September, 2016 was organized and supervised by the Ministry.

iii. The Ministry participated in the five State invitation wresting championship held in Ananbra State. Kogi State won 6 Gold medals in the Championship.

iv. At the First Japan Ambassador Judo Championship held in Abuja from the 27th November – 3rd December, 2016, the Ministry participated and the State won 1 Gold Medal, 2 Silver medals and 3 Bronze medals.

v. Kogi State Ministry of Youths and sports participated at the FCT Armature Inter-State Boxing Championship, held from the 7th – 11th December, 2016, and won 2 Gold medal, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals respectively.

vi.  The Ministry also participated in the zonal under 17 Handball Championship in Markudi Bunue State and won Silver medal.

vii. In 2016, the Ministry took the State Beach Soccer Team KADA 2016 Championship and won Gold medal and the overall best team of the championship.

viii.  CBN North Central Entrepreneurship Development centre.

The activities of this centre established for the entrepreneurship Development of youth of the zone is domiciled in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development. The Ministry has attended several   meeting of its Technical Advisory Committee in Markudi, the Benue State Capital, and talks are ongoing by the Ministry with the Central Bank to establish an outreach of the centre in Kogi State.

 COLLABORATIONS:

In the areas of youth empowerment, skills and capacity development, the  Ministry has identified some development partners and talks are on going for the training of over 5000 Kogi youths in various skills, and educational assistance on this, significant success has been recorded with the following development partners:

i. Global Institute for Advance and Professional Studies (GIFAPS) – Education and skills Acquisition Programmes.

ii. Young African Leader Initiative (YALI) – provision of tools, training, and technology to promote leadership. This is an International collaboration scheme that will lead to the provision of 500,000 jobs opportunities and a National Service Centre.

NOTE:

Its pertinent to note that, at the early stage of the present administration, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development organized A Youth Interactive forum with the Governor to mark the 100 days in office of His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

A novelty match was also organized by the Ministry between the Executive and the Local Government Administrators to mark the 2016 Democracy Day.
