The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development took off at the inception of the State in 1991 as State Women Commission headed by a Director.
However, with the inception of the first Civilian Administration in the State in January, 1992, the Commission was headed by Director-General. The Directors-General that served between January 1992 and November 1993 are:-
- Chief (Mrs.) Comfort Aiyepeku 1992-1992
- Chief (Dr) Mrs. Grace Gunwa 1992-1993
- Alhaji M.K Abdullahi 1997-1998
In the year 1997, the Commission metamorphosed to a full-fledged Ministry with the following members of the State Executive Council as its Commissioner.
They are:-
- Mrs. Getrude Oba 1997 to May 1999
- Hajia Salamatu Ize Atima May 1999-2000
- Mrs. Omolara M. Obayemi February 2001-May 2003
- Mrs. Yemisi Ogunmola 2003-June, 2005
- Olori Margaret B. Orebiyi 2005-2007
- Mrs. Ruth Eke Iyaji 2007-2009
- Mrs. Folashade A. Shinkaiye 2009 to date
Similarly, the Ministry has had a number of Permanent Secretaries that have served since its creation, they include:-

The Ministry has five Professional Directorates in addition to the General Services of Directorates of Administration and Finance.
The Professional Directorates are:-

- Rehabilitation
- Child Development
- Social Welfare
- Planning Research and Statistics.
VISION OF THE MINISTRY
The Vision of the Ministry is that Nigerian Women fully developed, and not discriminated upon.
Nigerian Women economically and politically empowered to contribute to National Development.
MISSION OF THE MINISTRY
The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development which is a baby of women’s struggle for recognition is to create awareness about the strategic and practical needs of women, and incorporating these into national and sect oral policies to facilitate the full integration of women into the Social, Economic and Political like of the Nation.
POLICY OF THE MINISTRY.
The National Policy on women signed in 2000 was to further reaffirm Nigerian’s commitment for the alleviation of the numerous constraints to women’s full integration in its development process.
