Kogi State has over two thousand educational institutions. This figure exclude vocational and non-formal educational institutions. Thus a brief write up on each of them would be an underrating task, therefore, focus will only be placed on few tertiary institutions in the state, while a distribution table has been made to cover the rest.

KOGI STATE UNIVERSITY, ANYIGBA
This citadel of learning was established in October, 1999. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun, Aremu, Obasanjo formally laid the foundation stone of the University on the 30th November, 1999.
Academic activities commence at the institution on the 3rd of April, 2000 with initial student population of 600.
The main function of the school is to provide functional education to its students in six disciplines which are Law, Arts, Social Sciences, National Sciences, Management Studies and Agriculture.

KOGI STATE POLYTECHNIC
Kogi State Polytechnic was established by the 1st and 2nd Executive Governor of Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu in 1992, vide the attended edict No. 6 of 1994. Academic programme at the school commenced in January 1993 and the institution run two campuses: the main campus located in Lokoja and the satellite campus at Osara.
It’s main function is to provide studies, training research and development of techniques in the Arts and Languages, Applied Sciences, Engineering, Management, Commerce, Education and other spheres of learning.
At present, about 6,000 students are undertaking various course of studies at the institutions, while about 5,000 grandaunt have graduated from the school.

FEDERAL COLLEGE EDUCATION, OKENE.
This is one of the Federal Government education institution in the state. It has five schools viz School of Education; School of Sciences; School of Languages; School of Arts and Social sciences; and school of Vocational and Technical Education.
The College has other academic units. These are Library, Academic Planning Unit; Centre for Continuing Education; Educational Technology Centre, Science Laboratory, Language Laboratory, Language Laboratory as well as Business Education Laboratory and Shorthand Studio.
The college also has Medical Centre. Registry, Bursary and Works Department as its non-academic departments. There are however, 27 academic departments in the college

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, KABBA
The college was established in 1964 and is one of the three College of Agriculture in the Division of Agriculture Colleges, under the agies of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The college provides studies, training and research works in the following fields viz Livestock; Basic science; Horticulture and Landscape Technology; agronomy; Agricultural Engineering; and Agricultural Extension. The college also run these accredited programmes; Pre-National Diploma, Agricultural Technology; Higher National Diploma in Crop Production Technology; and Higher National Diploma in Horticulture and landscape Technology. So far over 5000 students have graduated from the college.
