The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Kogi State, is as old as the creation of Kogi State in August, 1991. It is located in the State Secretariat Complex, Lokoja. Dr. Abdulkareem, the Honorable Commissioner of Commerce and Industry pilots the activities of the Ministry, supported by Dr. Elias A. Akuh who is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry.
It comprises of six (6) Directorates namely:-

Agricultural Resources

Kogi State has 38 forest reserves covering an area of 482,000 hectares, and government plantation which cover a total area of 600 hectares. About 55 exploitable wood species exist in Kogi State. These include Mahogany, Iroko, Apa, Oriro, Ayin, Iya, Igi-Oba (gmelina) etc in the open and forest reserves as well as teak and gmelina in the /government plantation. To encourage private plantation about 1,000,000 seedlings are being raised.
Fishery is encouraged by the two great rivers, Niger and Benue, as well as its tributaries. The common fish species in these rivers are clarias lazera, tilapia, hetero branchus and hetrotis. To boost fish production the State Government has contributed N20 million as counterpart fund under the ECOWAS fund and is developing fish hatcheries in two locations in the state.
Solid Mineral
Kogi State is blessed with abundant deposits of solid minerals. In fact, the Federal Ministry of Solid Mineral Development attests to the fact that ‘Kogi State has the highest concentration of varieties of strategic Solid Minerals.

The presence of Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd and Obajana Cement Company Plc are attributed to the existence of the required Solid Minerals. These industries also provide opportunities for investors to establish subsidiary industries in the State. These include industries such as Iron and steel foundries, cement, fertilizer, engineering complex, light forging industries, wire bolts, nuts etc.
The on-going dredging of river Niger and the construction of inland ports in Lokoja and Idah are additional infrastructural facilities which are expected to provide attraction for establishment of industries in Kogi State.
