PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

The Coming of EAS
EAS as a company started in 1986. Capt. Wada and a few friends that were working together at Dantata Group started it. When he left Zaria, he served as a pilot with Nigerian Airways before leaving in 1984 when he felt the need for more challenges. He went to fly for Dantata Group who had a fleet of aircraft at that time. Capt. Wada was appointed the General Manager and Chief Pilot and he set up an enviable Flight Department for the Group. By 1985, import license restriction and other related issues started affecting their businesses negatively, and they decided to sell off the aircraft. Capt Wada made a proposal for the hire purchase of their Boeing 707 aircraft which was successful. That was how he and his colleagues started commercial cargo services between Nigeria and the United Kingdom mainly and then to other cities in Europe in 1986.

EAS Cargo Airlines was the brand name initially. It had three aircrafts, one was owned and two were leased. By 1988, notable business men like Aliko Dangote, Alhaji Mohammed Indimi and Alhaji AbdulSamad Rabiu gave their own aircraft to EAS Airlines to manage as part of their operations. This continued until 1996 when the company acquired a Boeing 727 on a dry lease agreement and started scheduled passenger services in expansion of its business. Capt Wada, at this point did not want to go solo anymore. One interesting thing was that the membership of the Board of Directors was drawn from the Pilots and Engineers working with the company at the time.

The shares were evenly distributed as a morale booster to encourage every member to try to contribute positively to the development of the company. This was not to be. As the money was coming in, some of the members on the Board started to lose focus. Some began to veer into politics, wanting to become Local Government Chairmen and power brokers. One by one, they all left and Capt Wada, a man of impeccable character, a man that can never be corrupted or bought as testified by his colleagues, persevered. He did not lose his focus. EAS airline continued to fly until 2006 when the Ministry of Aviation imposed a minimum level of capitalization rule and gave airlines three months to raise a minimum of one billion naira or go out of business and do something else. Many options like raising money from the capital market were opened to him but one day, he needed to fly to Abuja from Lagos.

In order to move fast enough to catch his appointment, he boarded a Bellview flight departing at a suitable time that could meet his target. In the first class compartment, he met a dynamic young man with whom he got involved in a conversation. The young man took an interest in combining with EAS. The young man had just started Nicon Airways and he decided to come into EAS, to change the name, inject money into the company, pay them off, all the existing shareholders. The deal was sealed. Nicon Airways got 60% of the shares and the original EAS shareholders were left with 40% of the shares. One fact of note here is, because the joy of Capt Wada was to have a functional enterprise, it did not matter to him who owned majority shares as lack of capital had been the bain of the operations of EAS all the years.

Apart from airline business, Capt Wada has also been involved in consultancy services through Aeroconsult. This is a Training and Consultancy unit he established in 1993 along with some knowledgeable people who had worked and retired from the Federal Ministry of Aviation. He asked them to come together and impart knowledge to the younger ones because without training, it is difficult to maintain quality control. It was more like an institute focusing on certain core areas of aviation like quality management, air worthiness, licensing, etc.
Along the lines, he took time out and read for a B.Sc Degree in Business Administration and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from University of Abuja to build on his many years in business and management.

Horizon Construction Co. Ltd

His going into construction was informed by the current status and direction of our country. To move Nigeria from where it is, to going to achieve her vision 20-20:20 objective and to become one of the first 20 best economies in the world in the year 2020, you can only do that through massive construction of infrastructure. So, looking at industries in Nigeria, Capt Wada felt there were very few strong indigenous construction enterprises. In partnership with a friend, they decided to form a good medium sized construction Company which would be prided on quantity and timely performance of  medium size jobs. Their mission was to do it properly and deliver with quality on schedule, so that it becomes a point of reference to the extent that jobs that is too small for big time firms like Julius Berger would be given to Horizon Construction Co. In 2008, the company was born with brand new equipment and enough Technical staff and it started operation. In the course of construction business, Capt Wada has garnered so many experiences.

He has come to learn that a simple thing like the construction of a road becomes an emotional issue with certain communities. A lot of them feel they have been neglected for so long and opening up of a particular road brings them in contact with the outside world and, therefore, they became very happy. Some even donated their houses for his engineers to stay free of charge, so he could see the direct impact on some communities while they were constructing roads. It is on record that people even gave out free food, houses and sometimes chieftaincy titles because of these development projects. It has been very fulfilling for him to be involved in the lives of the people in this way. Horizon Construction Co. Ltd has so far handled various jobs in Kogi State, Niger State, FCT, Ekiti State and a 90meter bridge across the Niger River in Anambra State.
